Mike grew up in a loving home, playing baseball and excelling in academics. At a young age, Mike experienced personal tragedy within his family with the loss of his younger brother, which was quickly followed by the loss of his father due to cancer. Feeling hurt, alone, and lost; he turned to prescription pain medication and Marijuana to relieve depression and address his trauma. When the pills were no longer available, Mike began his descent into heroin use. At the age of 16, Mike entered a state-run treatment program, which he describes as an "approach to treatment which felt more institutional than it did a place to heal." He relapsed soon after leaving that program. At the age of 19, he had finally had enough and entered a program he describes as similar to ICFR. He believes that he finally received the services he needed to address his trauma and begin on the road to recovery. After working several jobs in recovery, he decided to pursue a career in Substance Use Disorder treatment at the Indiana Center for Recovery and quickly moved up the organization's ranks where he currently serves as Facilities Manager.
